Brian says: it's a layered shader where the darker areas are a blinn layered on top of a mental ray material (the more orangey areas.) the problem I was having was that the stencil would mask out the color just fine, but leave the reflectivity, bump map, specularity, etc unaffected. The result was that the blinn was over-riding the underlying shader in a weird way. I've circled a couple of areas on this comparison for you to see what I'm talking about. The chair on the right is the old one.
