What A Weekend!

Despuess animation transfer progress by Nick Wolensky! Transferring animation from base model rig to detailed model. Nick deserves extra kudos for this feat -in the cg world it has been my experience that he is quite unique as very few relish coding and problem solving like him.

What Video Game! What Shackles. What Rising!

Cerebus in Hell Video game level design by Anthony Buell
anthony.buell.environments@gmail.com
Dave Sim, Cerebus creator, has a video game idea -and a Sony Video Game Producer, who is also a Cerebus fan, is going to lend a helping hand. This is a side project and we'll be using parts of our film for the showcase pitch -so everyone working on the film get a piece of the action. (and again emphasize it will be a showcase pitch and not an actual working game demo pitch.)

What Wizard? What Priest? What Albino?

Wizard animation progress by Daniel Clark
dc289807@ohio.edu
Below an alternate version -any preference? We're leaning towards the top one. As you see we're purposefully departing from the more realistic animation in favor of a broad farcical cartooney feel for this one breakaway scene.

What Priest! What is Cerebus supposed to do?

Animation by Marcelo Pirk (issue #13)

Tonight and all weekend: CEREBUS TV E53
"What am I working on right now?" Or, rather, what was Dave Sim working on just before Christmas, 2010. The Church & State Dream Wall was finally done: Sim's biggest commission ever for an art collector in Michigan. He was al......so working on the cover to CEREBUS ARCHIVE #12 (the First Day Cover now available from ComiXpress) and -- having just been drawing Cerebus' mother-in-law, Mrs. Henrot Gutch for the Church & State Dream Wall -- got to thinking about the model for the character, the grandmother character from the GILES cartoons. Which leads of "Dave Sim's Top 5 Giles grandmother cartoons" PLUS! "The slowest comic book ever produced by Dave Sim": would you believe it took him all year to produce two pages?

What Priest! What Face! What bull! What Serpent!

Above two versions of the same scene, one more restrained than the other. Both animated by Manas Mishra. Any preference?
(actually there's a third animated by me, but that was before the new rig with the added lip sync control -that's my defense:))
Below the scene as it appears in issue#13

Lip sync animation progress by Justin Rogers of the High Priest who appears in issue #13

Below John Chen continues the process of making the close-up tentacles blend with the rest of the Serpent. See more at his site

More progress on the Minotaur by Steven Shearing, who will now be adding armour to the beast.

What Rendering! What Lip Sync! What Wizard Jewel and Minotaur!

In issue #1 the lonely Wizard has an arsenal of demons, skeletons and serpents -and yes we're throwing in a Minotaur for good measure. Everything short of a singing tea cup:) The minotaur doesn't actually do battle in the film or anything -just part of the general Wizard atmosphere.
Above is the modeling progress by Steven Shearing

Cerebus lip sync animation progress Manas Mishra

We now are starting to have a lot of animation done and about time we decide in what style we want to render it. Along with that comes which renderer to use. Here Vijay R who textured and rendered this scene using VRay in a previous post of ours, now playing around with Mental Ray which we're leaning towards. Still in progress. On our Facebook Film page this latest posting has inspired enthusiastic discussion on the differences of the two and which direction to go in. This process is all part of "Look Development", which will be the overall look we decide on for the film, which Vinay is working on. Another consideration is also it's quite common for scenes to have numerous different elements be rendered with different apps and then composited together. So there are a lot of different avenues and it will be exciting to see. Environment modeled by Steven Shearing.

And below is further progress on the Wizard's Serpent. The Serpent is modeled by Brian Buchmann, and here we have added hi rez details by John Chen for close ups. In the end the scales (as seen in yesterday's post) will be combined and added everywhere except for the underside as seen in progress here. We were thinking of having more than one model, one of the serpent for wide shots and then various tentacles etc for close-ups, but John is luckily making it all-in-one.

Below is the finished Flame Jewel that belongs to the Wizard and which Cerebus and his two "brother-in-crime" attempt to steal (issue #1)...it's very much the catalyst of our heist film. Our 'Maltese Falcon", what dreams are made of -if you will. Modeled by Reginald Pierre

My apologies to the modeler for the rough render:)

What Wizard's serpent, energy incantation and flame Jewel?

Tentacle modeling progress by John Chen

That serpent is summoned by the Wizard for our climactic battle, but all of it like the Flame Jewel that Cerebus and his two "brothers-in-crime" so eagerly seek is but an illusion. Below the Flame Jewel that eventually turns into a walnut (issue #1). Modeling progress on this central aspect to the story is by Reginald Pierre

And below the Wizard himself. Ap0logies for the rough render and edit.

This weekend: EP 52 http://www.Cerebus.TV/
Another of our popular QUICK CUTS episodes. Almost faster than the human eye and ear can register, Dave Sim reviews Michael and Laura Allred's MADMAN GARGANTUA collection, updates his work on the CHURCH & STATE DREAM WALL, a multi-part commission for an art collector in Michigan that will take up his entire dining room wall, and gives you a behind-the-scenes look at how Michael Allred came to do the first all-nude glamourpuss cover #19 (with guest appearances by Mick Taylor, Brian Jones, Ron Wood, Rod Stewart and Russ Heath), Madman pin-ups by Jack Kirby, Joe Kubert, Mark Schultz and Brian Bolland that are "to die" for and (finally!) coverage of Dave Sim's THE LAST SIGNING in September 2010 starting with the airport arrival and a funny little item on CGC-graded comic books with THE LAST SIGNING retailer, Calum Johnson of Halifax, Nova Scotia's STRANGE ADVENTURES comic store (winner of the JOE SHUSTER AWARDS HARRY KREMER AWARD for best Canadian retailer).
